When Your Outfit Needs Something: 3 Easy Finishing Touches

Have you ever gotten completely dressed, looked in the mirror and thought…

“Well, it’s fine. But it needs something.”

I certainly have.

And the funny thing is, the problem usually isn’t the outfit.

You probably don’t need to change your top. You don’t need another pair of pants. And you definitely don’t need to stand in the closet trying on six more things.

Sometimes an outfit simply needs a finishing touch.

That’s one of the reasons I love jewelry so much. A small change at your ears, neckline or wrist can make the clothes you already own feel more pulled together—and a little more like you.

So the next time you have one of those “something is missing” mirror moments, here are three places to look.

1. Start at Your Face

Sometimes your outfit doesn’t need more color or another layer. It just needs a little polish near your face.

That’s where a noticeable—but still very wearable—earring can make such a difference.

The James Earrings have that smooth, sculptural shape that catches the light without feeling fussy. They’re the kind of earring that can finish a simple tee, blouse or dress without making you feel overly dressed.

And I especially like that James comes in both silver and gold. You can choose the metal you naturally reach for most.

2. Give a Simple Top Some Personality

A solid or neutral top gives you a wonderful blank canvas for jewelry.

Instead of adding another clothing layer, try adding color and texture at the neckline.

Gertie does that without requiring you to figure out a complicated necklace stack. The smaller multicolored beads bring in pink, turquoise, green, cream, red, amber and darker tones, so there’s plenty of color—but the scale of the beads keeps the necklace very wearable.

And look at what happens against that white top.

The clothes are simple. Gertie becomes the interesting part.

That’s a trick you can use with pieces already hanging in your closet. White, cream, denim, black, and other simple tops can look completely different when you change the jewelry.

All those colors give you lots of possibilities for pulling together an outfit.

3. Don’t Forget Your Wrist

We tend to think first about earrings and necklaces, but sometimes the little finishing touch an outfit needs is down at your wrist.

A bracelet adds color, shine and movement—especially when you’re wearing three-quarter sleeves, rolled cuffs or a simple solid top.

Fallon makes this particularly easy because the bracelets can be worn together, separated or mixed into bracelets you already own.

That means you don’t have to create some perfectly planned bracelet stack.

Wear one.

Wear two.

Wear all three.

That’s my kind of complicated jewelry styling. 😉

The 10-Second Mirror Check

Before you decide an outfit isn’t working, look in the mirror and check three places:

Ears. Neckline. Wrist.

You don’t necessarily need jewelry in all three.

Instead, ask yourself:

“Which one needs a finishing touch?”

Maybe it’s a polished earring like James.

Maybe your plain top needs the color of Gertie.

Maybe everything above the waist looks just right, but Fallon would add a little something at your wrist.

One small change may be all the outfit needs.

Where does your outfit need a finishing touch?

You Probably Don’t Need a Different Outfit

The next time you look in the mirror and think your outfit is a little blah, don’t be so quick to blame your clothes.

You may already have exactly what you need hanging in your closet.

Add an earring.

Change the necklace.

Slip on a bracelet.

Sometimes that tiny finishing touch is what takes an outfit from “It’s fine” to “Yes. That’s better.”

And isn’t it nice when getting dressed can actually be that simple?

Life is complicated enough—your jewelry doesn’t have to be.
