The Easiest Necklace Layering Formula: One Bold + One Delicate

Sometimes I think we make necklace layering much harder than it needs to be.

We see those beautiful stacks with three, four, or even five necklaces and think, Well, I have no idea how to do that.

But you don’t have to start there.

One of my very favorite necklace-layering formulas is probably the easiest one of all:

One bold necklace + one delicate necklace.

That’s it.

My friend Amy is wearing the perfect example here.

She paired the bold Jaylee Necklace with the delicate Risen Necklace, and I love what happens when the two are worn together.

Jaylee gets your attention first with those beautiful oversized links.

Then your eye drops down and notices that tiny sparkling cross.

Neither necklace gets lost, and neither one has to compete with the other.

That is exactly what makes this formula work.

Why Bold + Delicate Works So Well

When two necklaces are very similar in size, weight, and style, they can sometimes compete for attention.

Instead, give them different jobs.

Let one necklace be the statement.

Let the other add the detail.

The Jaylee Necklace brings the boldness with its larger polished links, while the Risen Necklace adds a much finer chain and a small crystal cross.

One catches your eye.

The other gives you something pretty to notice next.

And because the necklaces have different visual weights, the finished look feels layered without feeling cluttered.

The Same Formula Can Look Completely Different

Here’s what I really love about this idea: it isn’t tied to one outfit, one neckline, or even one metal.

Take a look at another version.

Against a simple black top, the gold necklaces really stand out.

The larger chain creates a strong line around the neckline, while the little cross underneath softens the look and adds that extra bit of sparkle.

This is a perfect example of why a plain top can actually be one of the best backgrounds for your jewelry.

You don’t need a complicated outfit.

Sometimes the jewelry is the interesting part.

If your top is simple and solid, that is a wonderful time to let your jewelry do a little more talking.

And Yes, This Works Beautifully in Silver

Now look at the same idea in silver.

I love having this example because I know plenty of women who look at a gold necklace and immediately think, That’s pretty, but I wear silver.

No problem at all. The formula works exactly the same way.

The larger silver links create the bold layer, and the smaller cross drops underneath to add the delicate detail.

And notice something else: this time the top is striped.

There’s already a little more pattern going on, but the necklaces still work beautifully because the layering itself is simple.

That’s one reason this bold + delicate formula is so useful.

You can use it with a plain top, a button-down shirt, a print, or a stripe and still have a look that feels pulled together.

Start With One Bold Necklace

Look in your own jewelry box.

Your bold piece might be:

• a chunky chain
• a strand of larger beads
• a pearl necklace with some presence
• a stronger pendant
• a necklace with larger links or shapes

“Bold” doesn’t mean enormous. It simply means this is the necklace your eye notices first.

Then Add Something Delicate

Try pairing your bold necklace with a:

• small cross
• initial necklace
• petite pendant
• personalized necklace
• tiny gemstone
• dainty chain

The second necklace shouldn’t try to compete with the first one.

It should complement it.

Give the Necklaces a Little Breathing Room

This may be the most important part of layering.

You want to be able to see both necklaces.

If they land in exactly the same place, they can look tangled instead of layered.

Adjust the lengths so that the delicate necklace drops just below the bold one.

You don’t need a huge gap.

Look at these three examples. The necklaces are actually fairly close together.

But there is just enough space for you to see the shape of the larger necklace and the detail of the smaller one.

That little bit of separation can make all the difference.

Gold or Silver? Choose What You Love

These photos also make another point for me.

This look works in gold or silver.

If you love warm gold tones, go with gold.

If you reach for silver most days, do the same combination in silver.

And if you enjoy mixed metals, you can experiment with those too.

There really aren’t jewelry police hiding around the corner waiting to tell us we’ve broken a rule.

I promise.

Try This With Jewelry You Already Own

Before you decide you need a whole new necklace wardrobe, go look in your jewelry box.

Choose one necklace with a little more presence.

Then choose one smaller, more delicate piece.

Put them on together.

Adjust the lengths.

Then look in the mirror.

You may discover combinations you’ve never thought about wearing together before.

That is one of the things I love most about learning a few basic jewelry styling tricks.

Sometimes you don’t need more jewelry.

You just need a new way to wear what you already have.

The Easy Necklace-Layering Formula to Remember

The next time you want to layer necklaces, remember this:

One bold.
One delicate.
A little space between them.

That’s it.

You can always add another necklace later if you want to.

But you may discover that two are exactly enough.
